While most primetime TV shows don’t even have one Latina star, the new pilot “Devious Maids,” which is headed to ABC this fall, has four: Ana Ortiz (“Ugly Betty”), Roselyn Sanchez (“Without A Trace”), Dania Ramirez (“Heroes”), and Judy Reyes (“Scrubs”).
The show, which is being produced by “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry, also has something that no show has had since Salma Hayek began producing “Ugly Betty” on ABC in 2006: a Latina A-lister (Eva Longoria) as a co-producer!
Yet despite the fact that all of these proven and talented Latina actresses are starring on the new show, there are some bloggers who feel that the premise of the show—about four maids with big dreams who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills—will reinforce the stereotype that has long plagued Latina actresses in Hollywood: that they can only play “the help” on TV.
LatinoVoices caught up with Eva Longoria to talk about the debate surrounding ‘Devious Maids’. The Mexican actress—who is constantly working to get Latinos on TV, particularly in her work as a producer of The Alma Awards—talked about why the Latino community should be proud of the show, and why she doesn’t see it as a bad thing that four Latinas are playing maids.

Eva attended the “Pepsi Next: Drink It To Believe It” Event yesterday to promote Pepsi Next, which she endorses. Pepsi Next advertises sixty percent less sugar. As always, Eva looked amazing. She wore an Amanda Wakeley dress and Brian Atwood heels! You can check out 300+ photos of her at the event, as well as a video of her talking Pepsi Next! Enjoy!
“I feel like I’ve done a lot with my restaurants and my perfume and my cookbook and my production company. I’m doing a lot of work for the [Barack] Obama re-election campaign, which I’m really excited about. So that was one thing I wanted to do: take my civic responsibility more seriously as an American. And so I’m doing that now,” Eva said at the event about some other life goals she has, besides acting.

Eva Longoria may be saying goodbye to Wisteria Lane, but don’t think she’s leaving the world of primetime soaps.
Turning up in New York City this Good Friday to hype Pepsi’s new reduced sugar cola, Pepsi Next, the Desperate Housewives star talked to E! News exclusively about her future plans once the hit ABC drama draws to an end on May 13, including her new matchmaking show and a little something called Devious Maids.
If it’s as devious as Desperate’s final hurrah, viewers are in for a treat!
Per Longoria, Devious Maids is a new spicy serial drama she’s executive producing with Desperate mastermind Marc Cherry and ABC Studios that—like Housewives—follows four female leads. Only in the setup, which takes its cues from a Mexican telenovela format, the hot Latinas played by Ana Ortiz, Roselyn Sanchez, Dania Ramirez and Judy Reyes are the help.
“It’s probably going to fill [the Desperate Housewives] void really nicely,” Eva tells E!. “It’s about four women, four maids and their employers and their lives and it is so funny and dramatic and mysterious. It’s got all the great elements that Desperate Housewives has but with different content, a different point of view—the help’s point of view.”
Muy caliente! The show reportedly starts shooting next month.
But that’s not all Longoria’s got cooking. Following her 2010 divorce from NBA star Tony Parker and her recent breakup with Salma Hayek’s little brother, Eduardo Cruz, after a nearly year-long relationship, the newly single actress is also playing cupid.
She’s developing All About Love, a new dating series in which professional matchmakers Steve Ward and Amber Kelleher pair up singles looking for love in all the wrong places.
As for last month’s mistrial in Nicollette Sheridan’s wrongful termination suit against Cherry, Longoria told E! that she and her fellow castmates were largely unaffected by the legal battle which she told Good Morning America yesterday was an unfortunate “stain on our legacy as a hit show.”
“It was like a sideshow,” said the 37-year-old thesp. “We’d get an update once in a while then it was over. We were never really called to testify or get in the middle of it and then it just kind of happened on its own. It had absolutely zero effect on set.”
As a Mexican-American, Longoria also has been held up as the poster child for network diversity, a role she’s continued to embrace wholeheartedly in helping minorities gain a larger presence in the entertainment business.
“I think there’s definitely been an increase in minority groups on television whether it’s women or African-Americans or Hispanics or Asian-Americans,” she notes. ” It’s still not accurately reflective of the American demographic. I think [Hispanics] are maybe 10 percent of TV but 16 percent of the population. And I think there’s a lot of room for improvement for females in television which is the other minority group. But I think slowly but surely it’ll get up there.”
Longoria adds that is the reason she loves producing.
“As women you’re not gonna be able to sit back and wait for that role to come along. You’re gonna have to go write it, produce it, direct it and get it on the air,” she says.
And when she’s not hawking Pepsi Next, the soda giant’s latest stab at the diet market with 60 percent less sugar, Longoria also serves as a campaign co-chair for President Obama’s 2012 re-election effort.

Desperate Housewives is in the home stretch, says Eva Longoria. “It’s crazy,” she says calling from the Los Angeles set. “We’re on the last two episodes. The writing is coming in by the day.” And she adds, without even being asked, “It’s kind of up in the air and secretive.”
Longoria, 37, hasn’t really come to terms with ending her eight-year run as Gabrielle Solis, in part because the show has been saying goodbye since the start of this season. “We’ve had a long, 23-episodes to get to the end. I haven’t really processed any of my feelings. But this week, it’s been, ‘Oh my god! Wait, what’s going on?’ ”
But she already has loads of new projects lined up – having just launched a new EVAmour fragrance that sold out when she presented it last week on HSN – and this week, on Friday, she will help launch a new Pepsi product in Times Square. She’ll be handing out samples of Pepsi Next, which has 60 percent less sugar than regular soda.
“It’s so funny,” she says, with a laugh. “Things always happen seredipitously. I did this no-sugar diet for the past two months and just recently started incorporating sugars back into my diet. This product is kind of perfect – being 60 percent less sugar.”
She and Pepsi have a “long relationship” that goes beyond sugar, says Longoria. She has appeared in their Super Bowl commercials and appreciates that the company has been particularly supportive of the Latin community.
So it’s safe to say she’s never had a Coke? “I can’t even say the word!”
Instead, Longoria jokes, “If I was a soda, I would be Eva Next,” as she gets ready to take “a little bit of time off” after Housewives wraps before heading to work in Europe in May in June and start a film in July. “Closer to the elections,” she says, “I’ll be dedicating all my free time to the Obama campaign.”
In the meantime, she’s producing a new dating show, All For Love, for NBC. “It’s a modern take on dating,” she explains, to help people who are using the Internet or meeting people in bars. She says there will be three men who are looking for love and professionals will help find their soul mates. “The format is new and different,” says Longoria.
And it’s right up her alley because, she syas, “I’m a hopeless romantic.”
As for her own romance, she’s more tight-lipped. Is she dating on-again, off-again boyfriend Eduardo Cruz at the moment? “I’m not talking about that,” she says.

Multi-channel retailer, HSN has partnered with actor, director, producer and philanthropist Eva Longoria and Falic Fashion Group (FFG), to debut Longoria’s highly anticipated second fragrance, EVAmour by Eva Longoria.
EVAmour will launch exclusively on HSN during the 24 Hour Spring Beauty Event on March 29 live on HSN, HSN.com and HSN Mobile.
“EVAmour will become a personal scent for women who are confident, beautiful, sexy and intelligent…just like the HSN customer,” said Eva. “I know how I feel when I am wearing it and I wish every woman to feel that same sense of sexiness and power.”
For every bottle sold, Eva will donate $1.00 to the Eva Longoria Foundation which was created to help the Latina community build better futures for themselves and their families through education and entrepreneurship.
“Fragrance is about emotion, storytelling and aspiration,” said Betsy Olum, General Manager of Beauty at HSN. “HSN gives our partners a platform to tell their story and really engage with their fans. We are thrilled that Eva has chosen to debut her latest fragrance with HSN.”
The EVAmour collection on HSN includes the eau de parfum in various sizes and a gift set which includes the 3.4 fl oz, a mini travel bottle, a rollerball of the fragrance and a luxurious shower gel. The notes of the fragrance are comprised of Bergamot Blossom, Pink Lady Apple and Red Currant, with a heart of rich, sexy floral notes and end with a warm vanilla, amber and musk.
“Eva Longoria as a celebrity personality appeals to so many women. Eva Longoria as a fragrance has translated beautifully and coming off the success of her first fragrance it made perfect sense to follow with the launch of EVAmour. With HSN as a retail partner we feel this launch will be equally – if not more – successful and will solidify the Eva Longoria brand in the beauty industry,” says Jerome Falic, CEO Falic Fashion Industry.
Tune in to HSN on March 29 at 10 a.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. (all times EST) for the debut of EVAmour. An extended assortment of products from Eva will be available on HSN.com and HSN mobile.
