The executive producers and cast for ABC’s long-running dramedy, Desperate Housewives, appeared for what would be their last TCA TV press tour Tuesday in Pasadena. It was during the last TCA press tour held in the summer when ABC announced that this season would be their last.
So, several years after the network first presented the series that would later become a breakaway hit, the cast returned to face reporters and revealed their best moments, confessions, and reflections from the past eight seasons. Here are 10 highlights from the session.
1. Felicity Huffman’s last request for Lynette? She jokes that she wants to ride a horse while holding a gun. Creator and executive producer Marc Cherry responded, “As you can see, this isn’t the most creative method” for story planning.
2. Vanessa Williams’ best memory? As the newest housewife, Williams says she’s thankful that the fans accepted her as quickly as they did. As far as her greatest memory? The time she and the rest of the cast watched on as their set dresser got engaged.
3. Cherry will be pulling a Hitchcock. Apparently, one of the reporters remembered that Cherry promised he’d do a cameo in the series during the show’s first TCA session. Cherry says he’ll make good on that promise. “The hair and makeup people will go through more hell that day than they’ve ever had,” he says.
4. Ricardo Chavira’s biggest surprise of the show? Without missing a beat, he says, “That [Carlos and Gaby] are still together.”
5. Gaby and Carlos were inspired by a Golden Girl. Cherry says that he got the idea for the couple’s selfish attitudes from his days as a writer on Golden Girls. Rue McClanahan was able to get away with so much as self-obsessed Blanche and he decided that they could, too. “And the more self-centered they became, the funnier they became. They brought comedy layers to this couple that I never envisioned,” he says.
6. Help from above. Bree’s (Marcia Cross) threatening note echoing back to the one Mary Alice (Brenda Strong) received in Season 1 was a note from ABC chief Paul Lee.
7. The actors know nothing about their stories in advance. “I don’t trust any of them,” Cherry admits.
8. Cherry’s biggest surprise of the series? The fans accepted Lynette and Tom’s (Doug Savant) breakup. “I didn’t think we would ever be able to split Tom and Lynette up,” Cherry says. “Everyone else had gone through so much, the writers were just like ‘Let’s rip them apart’ ”
9. Huffman on how difficult playing the breakup was for her. “We actually started fighting off-screen,” she shares. “It was interesting, because it’s new and the gloves are off for the writers.”
10. No movie, no way. Cherry says that the series isn’t like Sex and the City — which still had ground to cover with its characters. “I’m just never sending these gals to Dubai. I think we’re done.”
Desperate Housewives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on ABC

“This is like having the funeral before you die.”
So said Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman at the show’s winter TCA panel today after constantly being asked about the show’s ending. The panel was a bit bittersweet, with the show’s creator Marc Cherry and stars Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Marcia Cross all reflecting on their eight-year run. However, could there still be life on Wisteria Lane after the TV series ends? Cherry addressed the possibility of a D.H. reunion movie head-on in the panel.
Plus, will Tom (Doug Savant) and Lynette (Huffman) reconcile before the series’ end? Here’s what Cherry & Co. had to say…
Cherry revealed he actually talked to Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King about doing a movie a few years ago and says King has a slight advantage. “Sex and the City only did like 69 episodes. The advantage for them was they hadn’t really plumbed the depths of those characters,” Cherry explained. “After eight years, I think we’re done. I’m happy about it. It’s not a bad thing. I feel very satisfied with where we are. I’m never sending these girls to Dubai. That’s all I’m saying.”
While loose ends will be tied up in the finale, don’t expect everything to be wrapped up in a pretty bow. “We don’t want to tie up every loose end,” executive producer Bob Daily said. “Life goes on on Wisteria Lane.” Cherry, who wouldn’t specify which loose ends would be wrapped up, said the audience is “never going to find out which state Fairview is in” and teases that “old familiar faces are going to be coming back to the show.” One person definitely coming back? Susan’s daughter Julie (Andrea Bowen). When asked if Nicollette Sheridan will reprise her role as Edie, Cherry replied, “No comment,” but hinted that she will not be coming back.
Daily said the writers “rewatched the pilot” before delving into the final season to try to have “as many echoes as possible to that first episode and the first season.” As for Cherry, he said he has had the series’ last act planned for the last seven and a half years and it has not changed.
Cherry said one thing he thought the show would never be able to pull off was Tom and Lynette’s split and he’s been please by the fan reaction to the storyline. “The fans have gone with it this year, which has been nice.” Still, Cherry gave a small nugget of hope to fans hoping Tom and Lynette can work it out, saying, “We have some interesting twists yet to come.”
When Huffman and Savant were asked about the breakup, Savant joked, “We hate it! It was a bad choice!” Huffman revealed it actually caused a bit of tension for the actors behind the scenes, saying, “We actually started fighting offscreen. Lite imitated art. It was interesting, because its the eighth year, you get to go places you haven’t been before. It’s been upsetting and we don’t get to work together as much, and working with Doug is one of my favorite things.”
Regarding another couple, Gabby and Carlos, Ricardo Antonio Chavira said he’s been most surprised by the fact “that we’re still together. They’ve become this couple that the audience tends to rely on and look at as the ones who kind of have it together and seem to be the strongest.” Quick to defend her fictional marriage, Huffman joked, “Your marriage is the strongest?!”
After everything they’ve been through, affairs, murder, blindness, rehab and more, Longoria joked, “I wouldn’t be surprised if [Carlos] is going to be gay.” Cherry admitted that when the show first started he had the most trouble figuring out Gabby and Carlos but says they have become the show’s “go-to comedy couple because they were both so despicable to one another.”
For Hatcher, her favorite moment of the series was a no-brainer: “It’s hard to beat the naked in the bushes scenes; probably one of the most fun, vulnerable, exciting, well-written moments in Susan’s personal journeys.”

After Gabrielle’s (Eva Longoria) abusive stepfather, Alejandro (Tony Plana), met his demise on “Desperate Housewives,” the girls thought it best to bury the body themselves.
Then, when Detective Chuck Vance (Jonathan Cake) began investigating the murder, he met his own demise — but who killed him? Access Hollywood hit the set for his funeral to get the answers from the ladies of Wisteria Lane themselves.
“Oh my God — this is such a big who done it?’” Eva told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Tim Vincent during an exclusive visit to the show’s set. “Everybody’s doubting everybody at this point. The girls and I — we have a meeting and I think maybe Bree’s a little off, and then somebody thinks maybe it’s Carlos.
“I think maybe it’s Carlos too,” she added, referencing her onscreen husband, played by Ricardo Chavira. “Everybody is just pointing fingers at who we think might have done it.”
A victim of a hit and run, Detective Vance now lies in a casket, captured by Access Hollywood’s cameras on the top secret set of his funeral, filmed on location at a Los Angeles church.
Since the cop was hot on the trail of the “Housewives” — who covered up a murder — they weren’t exactly sorry to see him go.
“I think we vacillate between going, ‘Chuck Vance is dead,’ and, ‘We’re glad that’s over!’” Felicity Huffman, who plays Lynette Scavo on the ABC hit added.
Tune in to “Desperate Housewives” to watch the ladies handle Det. Vance’s funeral when the episode airs on Sunday at 9 PM EST/PST on ABC.
